A chip in your windshield may seem like a minor annoyance, but you shouldn’t delay in getting that chip repaired. Any bump in the road can cause your windshield to crack beyond repair; meaning that you are going to pay a lot more than if you’d had it fixed sooner. To help prevent chips in your windshield, follow the tips below.

Don’t follow construction or dump trucks too closely. Most of the time, these trucks carry materials that can fly off the back of the truck, and if you’re behind them, you’re in the line of fire.

Don’t tailgate smaller cars. The rear tires fling small rocks up from the road and straight at your windshield.

Don’t park on the roadside. Make an effort to find a driveway or parking lot, away from speeding cars.

Regularly check your wiper blades. Cracked, bent, broken, or torn wipers can easily chip your windshield.

Frequently check the windshield for small chips, and call Auto Glass Repair Eagle ID if any are found.

If your windshield has ice or frost, use the defroster on the lowest possible setting, as its heat could cause a crack. Only plastic ice scrapers should be used, as metal scrapers can cause scratches and chips.

If your windshield is chipped there are certain steps you can take to prevent the chip from getting worse. Cover the outside of the chip with clear plastic packing tape to create a barrier against dirt and moisture (don’t try to seal the chip with any liquid such as nail polish or glue; it will expand and cause a crack).

If at all possible, park in a shady spot. Don’t use a sunshade, which can cause the windshield to overheat and crack. Leave the windows open a bit to prevent heat buildup inside the car. Try not to slam the hood, doors, or trunk lid; any vibration could turn that chip into a crack.

Windshield chips are best avoided, but they do happen. If your windshield is chipped, immediately follow the steps above to prevent any further damage, and call Sir Auto Glass & Calibration in Eagle ID without delay. Repairing a chip might make a dent in your wallet, but it’s far less costly than a new windshield.
